Now available on Amazon.com, Bar None: A True-Life Pioneer Story is Val Orr’s memoir of growing up on her family’s Colorado ranch, and using the life lessons it taught her to fight through three Supreme Court appearances in a twelve-year struggle for equal rights.
Yodeling Cowboys and More
She and I spent over a year together, criss-crossing the country to interview ranch hands, litigators, yodeling cowboys, civil rights activists, and an old high school boyfriend –- all to capture the gravity and whimsy of a journey whose lessons are universal: fairness is worth the fight, a joyful life is its own reward, and skin color doesn’t matter.
Partner and Publisher
As her writing partner, I helped her find the heart of her story among the hundreds of hours of recordings we made, and reveal that heart by teasing out the simple truths among life’s complex messages. We crafted scenes that showcased her vulnerabilities and strengths, her ranch-charm and DC-wisdom, and her role in changing the laws that make today’s workplace more fair for everyone.
We self-published this work under her new imprint: BarNone Press. Laced with grit and charm, Bar None shows that pioneer spirit and personal accountability are timeless.
Working with Val was a privilege, and this collaboration is among the very best work I have every done.
